on a macro scale, enslave has a unnecesarily long first act, a middle of sorts and a rushed ending that's practically a lore dump.

dying because of that isn't much of a hassle most of the time, as you can carry trip with you if you'd like to pick some orbs that are out of the way.

Things start to fall when the writing tries its best to justify the reasonings behind things that they took from the original myth, like pigsy's entire characterization (a mess, like, lusting after your friend's daughter, a daughter you saw grow up, and that unnecesary jealously that it's just not fun at all - most of his humor falls flat) and the not romance (but yes romance) between monkey and trip, considerin that the latter pretty much controls the former with electric shocks (monkey dying for disobeying trip is a feature in the game also, if you stray too far from her). monkey as a character offers a layered and entertaining protagonist to follow, he's resourceful, grumpy yet funny and focused, and has great rapport with trip, making their banter enjoyable.

There are things to enjoy in enslaved: odyssey to the west, like the amazing performance of andy serkis and the rest of the cast.
